Official Breakdown

Etsy seller fee schedule (2026)

Every Etsy transaction involves a combination of fixed and variable fees based on your listing type, sales volume, and seller bank account location.

01

Listing fee

$0.20 / item

Charged when publishing a listing. Listings stay active for four months or until the item sells. When multi-quantity items sell, the listing auto-renews at $0.20 per unit sold.

02

Transaction fee

6.5% total sale

Assessed on the total amount charged to the customer. This includes the item listing price, postage/shipping charged, and optional gift wrapping services.

03

Payment processing

3.0% + $0.25 US

Deducted for handling transactions via Etsy Payments. Rates vary by the country of your bank account (e.g. 4.0% + £0.20 in the UK, 4.0% + €0.30 in the Eurozone).

Payment processing & regulatory operating rates by country

Etsy automatically applies processing and compliance rates based on the bank account location where your shop disbursements land.

Formula & Calculations

How Etsy calculates your fee deductions

Understanding the mathematical formula behind Etsy payouts allows you to price products accurately and avoid unexpected deductions.

The complete order formula

When an item sells on Etsy, revenue is distributed across four distinct cost buckets:

Total Revenue = (Item Price × Quantity) + Shipping Charged

Etsy Fees = Listing Fee + (Revenue × 6.5%) + (Revenue × Pay% + PayFlat) + (Revenue × Reg%) + Offsite Ads

Seller Costs = Material Cost + Actual Postage + Packaging

Net Profit = Total Revenue - Etsy Fees - Seller Costs

Step-by-step example:

  • Sale Price: $40.00 item + $5.00 shipping charged = $45.00 revenue.
  • Listing Fee: $0.20 fixed listing fee.
  • Transaction Fee: 6.5% of $45.00 = $2.93.
  • US Payment Processing: 3.0% of $45.00 + $0.25 = $1.60.
  • Total Etsy Fees: $0.20 + $2.93 + $1.60 = $4.73 (10.5% effective rate).

Margin vs. markup: what sellers confuse

A common pricing mistake among Etsy artisans is confusing profit margin with cost markup. Setting a 50% markup does not mean you take home 50% profit.

Profit Margin (Share of Revenue)

Calculated as: (Net Profit ÷ Revenue) × 100

Measures how many cents of every dollar collected remain in your pocket after paying all platform fees and production costs.

Markup (Multiplier on Cost)

Calculated as: (Net Profit ÷ Total Costs) × 100

Measures the percentage return generated on your invested capital. A 100% markup on $15 of cost produces $15 profit ($30 price), yielding a 50% margin before platform fees.

5 strategies to minimize fees and protect margins

While mandatory fees cannot be bypassed, strategic product structuring and operational workflows can significantly lower your effective fee percentage.

01

Bundle items into multi-packs

The fixed $0.20 listing fee and $0.25 payment processing flat fee take a much larger bite out of low-ticket transactions. Selling a 3-pack for $30 instead of three individual $10 orders saves $0.90 in fixed platform fees.

02

Audit your Offsite Ads eligibility

If your shop generated under $10,000 USD in the past 365 days, evaluate whether the 15% advertising fee aligns with your unit economics. You have the right to opt out in your Shop Manager under Settings > Offsite Ads.

03

Incorporate shipping into listing price

Because Etsy charges the 6.5% transaction fee on shipping charged, offering "Free Shipping" by rolling postage into the item price does not increase your percentage fee, but it improves search visibility and conversion rates.

04

List in your native bank currency

Always match your Etsy listing currency to your bank account's deposit currency. Listing in USD with a UK or European bank account triggers an avoidable 2.5% currency conversion fee on every deposit.

05

Build digital & printable product lines

Digital assets have zero recurring material, packaging, or postage costs. Adding downloadable templates, planners, or craft patterns diversifies revenue with profit margins exceeding 75%.

06

Evaluate Etsy Plus value

The $10/month Etsy Plus plan provides 15 listing credits ($3.00 value) and $5.00 in Etsy Ads credits. If you already spend on ads and publish frequent listings, the effective net cost drops to only $2.00/month.

Answers for Sellers

Frequently asked questions

Clear, direct answers to the most common questions regarding Etsy seller finances and platform policies.

What are the core mandatory fees when selling on Etsy?
Every transaction includes three primary charges: a $0.20 USD fixed listing fee (which renews every four months or upon each sale), a 6.5% transaction fee on the full order amount (item price + shipping charged + gift wrap), and a country-specific payment processing fee (3.0% + $0.25 in the United States, 4.0% + £0.20 in the United Kingdom).
When does Etsy deduct listing fees and transaction fees?
Listing fees are charged to your payment account the moment you publish or renew a listing. Transaction fees and payment processing fees are automatically deducted from the buyer's funds at the moment the purchase completes, before the net disbursement is scheduled to your bank account.
Why does Etsy charge a transaction fee on shipping?
Etsy introduced the 6.5% transaction fee on shipping charges to prevent sellers from inflating shipping fees (for example, listing an item for $1 and charging $49 shipping) to bypass platform commission. Both the item price and shipping charge are taxed equally.
Can I opt out of Etsy Offsite Ads?
Yes, if your shop has earned less than $10,000 USD in gross sales over the preceding 365 consecutive days. Once your trailing 12-month revenue reaches or exceeds $10,000 USD, participation in Offsite Ads becomes mandatory for the remaining life of your shop at a discounted 12% rate (capped at $100 per attributed sale).
What happens to fees if I issue a full refund to a customer?
When you cancel an order and issue a full refund through the Etsy Shop Manager, the 6.5% transaction fee and payment processing fee are automatically credited back to your payment account. If you issue a partial refund, the transaction fee and percentage processing fee are credited proportionally. Note that the original $0.20 listing fee is non-refundable.
How accurate is this calculator compared to my actual Etsy statement?
This calculator implements the exact mathematical formulas published in the official Etsy Fees & Payments Policy, including listing renewal, order commissions, country-specific processing rates, and local regulatory taxes. Small differences of a few cents on your monthly statement can occur if your shop incurs state/local sales tax collection, shipping label adjustments, or currency exchange rate fluctuations.
